MATERIALS REQUIRED:
Columbia-Minerva Nantuk Sweater & Afghan Yarn (2 oz pull skein):
Color A: 5 (5-6) skeins
Colors B, C & D: 1 skein each
Needles: One each "Boye" crochet hooks Sizes H & I
Gauge:
Pat on Size H: 2 pats to 3½ inches; 4 rows to 3 inches
On Size I hook: 1 pat to 2 inches; 5 rows to 4 inches
Skirt: Starting at waistline with Size H hook and Color A—ch 121 (133-145).
Row 1: In 5th ch from hook, drawing up first loop of each dc to 1 inch, work 2 dc-ch 2 and 2 dc for a shell, * skip 2 ch, 1 dc in next ch, skip 2 ch, 1 shell in next ch, repeat from * across, skip last 2 ch, join with sl st to 3rd ch st, ch 3. Do not turn.
Note: Always draw up first loop of each dc to 1 inch.
Row 2: 1 shell in center of first shell, * 1 dc in next single dc, 1 shell in center of next shell, repeat from * around, join with sl st to 3rd ch st, ch 3. Counting the ch-3 as 1 dc there are 20 (22-24) single dc's and 20 (22-24) shells around.
Rows 3 through 9: Repeat Row 2.
Rows 10 through 13: 2 dc-ch 3 and 2 dc shell in center of first shell, * 1 dc in next single dc, 2 dc-ch 3 and 2 dc shell in center of next shell, repeat from * around, join to 3rd ch st, ch 3.
Row 14: 1 shell in center of first shell, * 2 dc in next single dc, 1 shell in center of next shell, repeat from * around, end 1 dc in base of ch-3, join, ch 3.
Rows 15 through 17: 1 shell in center of first shell, * 1 dc in each of the 2 single dc's, 1 shell in center of next shell, repeat from * around, 1 dc in last dc, join, ch 4.
Rows 18 through 25: 1 shell in center of first shell, * ch 1, 1 dc in each of next 2 single dc's, ch 1, 1 shell in center of next shell, repeat from * around, ch 1, 1 dc in last dc, join to 3rd ch st. For longer skirt add rows here. Join Color B, ch 4. Change to Size I hook.
Row 26: With Color B—Repeat Row 18, join to 3rd ch st, join Color C, ch 4.
Row 27: With Color C—Repeat Row 18, join to 3rd ch st, join Color D, ch 4.
Row 28: With Color D—Repeat Row 18, join and fasten off.
Yoke: Place a marker in first single dc of first row for side seam, place 2nd marker in 11th (12th-13th) single dc for other side seam.
Back—Small & Large Only:
Row 1: Join Color A in one marked dc. With Size I hook, ch 3 to count as first dc, [2 dc in next ch-2 space, 1 dc in base of next shell, 2 dc in next ch-2 space, 1 dc in next dc] 2 (3) times, * 1 dc in next ch-2 space, 1 dc in shell, 1 dc in next space, 1 dc in next dc, repeat from * to space before last 2 (3) shells, [2 dc in next space, 1 dc in shell, 2 dc in next space, 1 dc in next dc] 2 (3) times working off last 2 loops of last dc with Color B, ch 3, turn. Last dc is worked in marked st.
Medium Only: Join Color A in one marked st, ch 3 to count as first dc, [2 dc in next ch-2 space, 1 dc in base of next shell, 2 dc in next ch-2 space, 1 dc in next dc] twice, 2 dc in next space, 1 dc in next shell, * 1 dc in next space, 1 dc in next dc, 1 dc in next space, 1 dc in next shell, repeat from * 5 times more, 2 dc in next space, 1 dc in next dc, [2 dc in next space, 1 dc in next shell, 2 dc in next space, 1 dc in next dc] twice, working off last 2 loops of last dc with Color B, ch 3, turn. Last dc is worked in marked st.
All Sizes: Work on the 49 (55-61) dc's:
Row 2: With Color B—counting turning-ch as first dc, * skip 2 dc, 2 dc-ch 2 and 2 dc shell in next dc, skip 2 dc, 1 dc in next single dc, repeat from * across working off last 2 loops of last dc with Color C, ch 3, turn.
Row 3: With ch-3 as first dc, * 1 shell in center of next shell, 1 dc in next single dc, repeat from * across working off last 2 loops of last dc with Color A. Always working off last 2 loops with next color, repeat Row 3 for pat, working 1 row each of Colors A, D, B & C. Omit turning-ch on last row. Width across back is 16 (18-20) inches.
Armholes: Continuing in same color sequence, sl st in each st to 2nd single dc, sl st in 2nd dc, ch 3, work in pat to last shell, ch 3, turn—1 pat left unworked at each side for underarm. Work on the 6 (7-8) shells for 3 more rows.
Neck: Work across 2 shells and 3 single dc, work 1 dc in next shell, ch 3, turn.
Row 2: 1 dc in next shell, 1 dc in single dc, 1 shell in next shell, 1 dc in next single dc, ch 3, turn.
Row 3: 1 dc in dc, 1 shell in shell, holding back last loop of each dc work 1 dc in next single dc and in turning-ch, yo and through all 3 loops, ch 3, turn.
Row 4: 1 shell in shell, 1 dc in single dc.
Small Only: fasten off.
Medium & Large Only: Work 1 more row, fasten.
All Sizes: Join Color A in third shell from end of last long row, ch 3 for first dc, [1 dc in next single dc, 1 shell in next shell] twice, 1 dc in last dc working off last 2 loops with next color. Finish to correspond to other side.
Front: On right side, join Color A in same dc as last dc of Row 1 on back yoke, ch 3 and work in dc across inc'ing to 49 (55-61) dc same as on back, end last dc in same dc as first dc on back. Work same as back to 2 rows below neck. On next row start shaping neck same as on back. After Row 4, work 2 (3-3) rows more to match back armhole. Fasten off. Finish other side to correspond.
Sew shoulder seams.
Sleeves: Work with Color A only. Ch 38 (44-44).
Row 1: 2 dc-ch 2 and 2 dc shell in 5th ch from hook. * skip 2 ch, 1 dc in next ch, skip 2 ch, 1 shell in next ch, skip 2 ch, 1 dc in next ch, repeat from * across, ch 3, turn: 6 (7-7) shells across.
Row 2: * 1 shell, 1 dc and 1 shell in center of shell for an inc, 1 dc in next single dc, repeat from * across, ch 3, turn: 12 (14-14) shells across.
Work 2 rows even.
Sleeve Cap: Sl st across first pat, work to last pat, turn. Repeat last row 3 (4-4) more times. Fasten off. Draw top of sleeve tog to fit armhole for puffed effect. Sew sleeves in place then sew side and sleeve seams.
With Size H hook and Color A— on right side starting at shoulder seam, work 1 sc in first st, * ch 5, sl st in 2nd ch of the ch-5 for a picot, join with 1 sc on neckline, repeat from * around neck, spacing sts to keep work flat, join with sl st to first st, fasten off.
Cord: With 2 strands of Color A—crochet a 60-inch chain. Draw through a dc row at waistline.
