J. & P. Coats and The Clark Thread Company were originally different companies and published under different copyrighted names. Later, Coats began operating under the name Spool Cotton Company and publications were published and copyrighted under the name Spool Cotton Company until 1954. At that time, a merger between Coats and Clark companies was completed and publications were published and copyrighted under the name Coats & Clark.
