MATERIALS REQUIRED:
Columbia-Minerva
Wool 4-Ply Worsted (4 oz. pull skein)
Color A (Black) 8 skeins
Color B (Off White) 5 skeins
Color C (Orange) 1 skein
Color D (Kelly) 1 skein
OR
Nantuk 4-Ply (4 oz pull skein)
Color A (Black) 8 skeins
Color B (Off White) 5 skeins
Color C (Orange) 1 skein
Color D (Kelly) 1 skein
Needles: One "Boye" afghan hook Size J, one steel crochet hook Size 0 and one tapestry needle
Gauge: 4 sts to 1 inch; 3 rows to 1 inch
Side Panels: With afghan hook and A — ch 36.
Row 1: Draw up a loop in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Take off loops as follows: Yo and draw through 1 loop, * yo and draw through 2 loops, repeat from * across.
Row 2: Counting loop on hook as first st, * insert hook in next upright st and draw up a loop, repeat from * across, drawing up last loop through last st. Take off loops. Repeat Row 2 until there are 195 rows from start. Sl st across last row. Fasten off. Make 2.
Center Panel: With A — ch 120. Work in afghan st for 27 rows. Break off A.
With B — work 141 rows. Break off B.
With A — work 27 rows. Sl st across last row. Fasten off.
Embroider in cross st, following charts. Small motifs are started on 4th row from each end and 4 sts from outer edge. Center a small motif between each corner. Start large design 6 rows above black section of center panel. Reverse for opposite end. After embroidery has been completed, sew side panels to center panel.
With A and Size 0 hook — crochet 1 row of sc around, inc'ing in corners. Fasten off.
TASSEL FRINGE: Wind A around a 5-inch cardboard. Cut at one end. Fold 10 strands in half and with separate strand, tie around ½ inch below fold. Make 76 tassels. Starting on short end with A and Size 0 hook — crochet 1 sc in first sc, * ch 4, sl crochet hook through top of one tassel and ch 1 tightly to fasten, ch 4, skip 4 sc, work 1 sc in next sc, repeat from * across until there are 38 tassels. Work other side the same. Trim tassels.
Be sure your stitch gauge is correct.
