Striped Daisy Stitch Afghan

Approximately 48 x 60 ins., without fringe.

(For Intermediate Knitters)

MATERIALS: Columbia-Minerva Nantuk 4-ply (4 oz. ball)-9 Color A; 1 each of Colors B, C and D.
Nantuk colors shown are (A) Dk Beet, (B) Dk Coral, (C) Med Coral, (D) Lt Coral.
NEEDLE: Circular needle, 36 in. size 9 -or size needed to obtain gauge given below.
CROCHET HOOK: Size F.

GAUGE: In pat-5 sts and 6 rows = 1 in.
Take time to precheck gauge and pat.

NOTES: Afghan is worked in one piece. Leave a 4" length when joining and ending colors. Break A at end of last row used and at end of every 6th row throughout stripes. Break B, C and D at end of every 2nd row and tie each pair of corresponding ends securely in a square knot as work progresses. Work A ends into closest knot and secure.

DAISY STITCH PATTERN: (Multiple of 4 sts plus 1.)

Row 1: (wrong side) P.

Row 2: P 1, * k 3 tog leaving sts on needle, yo, k same 3 sts tog once more and sl sts off needle, p 1 *; rep between *'s to end.

Row 3: P.

Row 4: P 1, k 1, p 1, rep between *'s in row 2 to last 2 sts, end k 1, p 1.

Rep these 4 rows for pat throughout.

AFGHAN:

With A cast on 241 sts and work in pat for 4", end on right side with row 2 or 4. With care to keep in pat, ** work 2 rows B, 2 rows C and 2 rows D for tri-color stripe, then work 6 rows A **. Rep 12 rows between **'s 3 times more, then work 2 rows B, 2 rows C and 2 rows D, having 5 tri-color stripes in all with an A stripe between. Afghan should measure about 13" from beg.

With A work in pat until 11" above last tri-color stripe, end with a right side row. Rep 12 rows between **'s 3 times having 3 tri-color stripes and 3 A stripes. Afghan is now at center and should measure about 30" from beg. Reversing colors in tri-color stripes, † work 2 rows D, 2 rows C, 2 rows B, 6 rows A †. Rep 12 rows between †'s once more, then work 2 rows D, 2 rows C and 2 rows B, having 6 tri-color stripes in all (last 3 stripes in reverse colors) with an A stripe between.

With A work in pat until 11" above last tri-color stripe, end with right side row. Rep 12 rows between †' s 4 times, then work 2 rows D, 2 rows C and 2 rows B, having 5 reverse tri-color stripes with an A stripe between. With A work 4" more ending with a p row. Bind off on right side as to k. Work in ends on wrong side.

FINISHING: From right side, with crochet hook and A, keeping edges flat work a row of sc across upper and lower ends working about 2 sc in every 3 sts.

Fringe: Wind A loosely around a 5" piece of cardboard; cut one end. Working from the wrong side of afghan, beg in first sc on either end, * fold 4 strands of cut yarn in half forming a loop, insert hook in sc and draw all strands of loop through sc for about 1", then draw loose ends through loop and tighten; rep from * in every other sc across edge ending in last sc. Work fringe on opposite end in same way.

Steam afghan lightly to measurements and trim fringe evenly.
