Crochet Hooks: 9mm [US M-13] and 10mm [US N-15]. 3 Stitch markers; yarn needle.
GAUGE: 12 sts = 7"; 8 rows =7" in pat with larger hook. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge given.
NOTE: Poncho can be made as written with linked double crochet stitches for a more solid looking fabric, or in double crochet stitches (dc) for a more open fabric.
SPECIAL ABBREVIATIONS:
Ldc (Linked dc) = Insert hook in the side of the last st in the vertical lp close to the base of the st, yo and pull through a lp, insert hook where next st is to be, yo and pull through a lp, [yo and pull through 2 lps on hook] twice.
Beg Ldc = Insert hook in 3rd ch from hook, yo and pull through a lp, insert hook where next st is to be, yo and pull through a lp, [yo and pull through 2 lps on hook] twice.
Last Ldc = Insert hook in the side of the last st in the vertical lp close to the base of the st, yo and pull through a lp, insert hook where next st is to be, yo and pull through a lp, insert hook in first ch of beg ch- 3 on rnd, yo and pull through the ch and 2 lps on hook at once, yo and pull through 2 lps on hook.
PONCHO
With larger hook, ch 39.
Row 1 (Right Side): Insert hook in 3rd ch from hook, yo and pull through a lp, insert hook in next ch, yo and pull through a lp, [yo and pull through 2 lps on hook] twice (counts as 2 sts), work Ldc in each ch across; turn - 37 sts. (Note: If working all in dc, dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across - 37 sts.)
Row 2: Ch 3, beg Ldc in first st, [Ldc in next 8 sts. 3 Ldc in next st (mark center st of 3-Ldc group)] 3 ¬times, Ldc in next 8 sts, 2 Ldc in last st turn - 45 sts (Note: Move markers up with each row or rnd.)
Rows 3, 4, and 5: Ch 3, beg Ldc in first st, [Ldc in each st to marker, 3 Ldc in marked st] 3 times, Ldc in each st to last st, 2 Ldc in last st; turn - 69 sts at end of Row 5.
Rnd 1: Ch 3, beg Ldc in first st, [Ldc in each st to marker, 3 Ldc in marked st] 3 times, Ldc in each st to last st; work last Ldc to join; turn - 76 sts.
Rnd 2: Ch 3, beg Ldc in same st as joining, [Ldc in each st to marker, 3 Ldc in marked st] 3 times, Ldc in each st around, work last Ldc in same st as beg ch-3 to join; turn - 84 sts.
Rnd 3: Ch 3, beg Ldc in same st as joining, skip first marker, Ldc in each st around to 2nd marker, 3 Ldc in marked st, skip 3rd marker, Ldc in each st around, work last Ldc in same st as beg ch-3 to join; turn - 88 sts.
Rep Rnds 2 and 3 five more times -148 sts on last rnd.
Fasten off.
COLLAR-Row 1: With right side facing and smaller hook, attach yarn at right neck edge; ch 1, sc evenly spaced across neck edge; turn.
Rows 2-6: Ch 1, sc in each sc across; turn.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, working 3 sc in corners, sc across collar, down then up front slit opening; join to first sc; turn.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, Reverse sc in each st around; join. Fasten off.
BOTTOM EDGING: With right side facing and smaller hook, attach yarn at lower edge; ch 1. Reverse sc in each st around; join. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
