MODA DEA™ "Sassy Stripes", Art R105 (1.76 ounce/147 yard balls): 2 Balls No. 6997 Lucky.
Double-pointed Knitting Needles: 3.75mm [US 5]. Stitch marker; yarn needle.
GAUGE: 21 sts = 4"; 29 rows = 4" in St st. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needles to obtain the gauge.
NOTE: Sl all sts as if to purl.
LEG: Cast on 40 (48, 56) sts. dividing sts on 3 needles as follows: Needle 1: 12 (16, 18) sts; Needle 2: 16 (16, 20) sts: Needle 3: 12 (16, 18) sts. Join to work in the round taking care that sts are not twisted. Work in K2, P2 ribbing until 5 (7, 9)" from beg, end with Needle 3.
Next Rnd: K14 (14, 18), [P2, K2] 3 (4, 5) times, P2, K12 (16, 16).
Divide for Heel: Sl last 10 (14, 14) sts of last rnd worked and first 12 (12, 16) sts of next rnd onto 1 needle for heel - 22 (26, 30) sts. Put rem 18 (22, 26) sts for instep on a different needle. Cut yarn.
With wrong side of work facing and working on heel sts only, work as follows:
Row 1: P2 (0, 2), [P2 tog, P2] 5 (6, 7) times, [P2tog] 0 (1, 0) time - 17 (19, 23) sts.
Row 2: K1 * sl 1, K1; rep from * across.
Row 3: K1, P to last st, K1.
Rep Rows 2 and 3 until heel measures approx 1 ½ (2, 2 ½)", end Row 3.
Next Row: K, inc 1 (3, 3) sts evenly spaced - 18 (22, 26) sts.
Turn Heel (Wrong Side): Sl 1, P10 (12, 14), P2 tog, P1, turn.
Next Row: Sl 1, K5, sl 1, K1, psso, K1, turn.
Next Row: Sl 1, P6, P2 tog, P1, turn.
Next Row: Sl 1, K7, sl 1, K1, psso, K1, turn.
Continue in this manner, working 1 st more st before the dec every row until 12 (14, 16) sts rem, end right side row.
Gusset and Foot: With the same needle (Needle 1), pick up and K8 (9, 11) sts across side of heel, with Needle 2 work across 18 (22, 26) sts of instep in ribbing as established, with Needle 3 pick up and K8 (9, 11) sts across other side of heel and K first 6 (7, 8) sts of heel to same (3rd) needle - 46 (54, 64) sts divided as follows:
Needle 1: 14 (16, 19) sts; Needle 2: 18 (22, 26) sts; Needle 3: 14 (16, 19) sts.
Keeping continuity of instep ribbing and working rem sts in St st, work as follows:
Rnd 1: Needle 1: K to last 3 sts. K2 tog, K1; Needle 2: work in ribbing as established; Needle 3: K1, sl 1, psso, K to end.
Rnd 2: Work even.
Rep Rnds 1 and 2 until 36 (44, 52) sts rem - Needles 1 and 3: 9 (11, 13) sts; Needle 2: 18 (22, 26) sts.
Work even until foot measures 1 ¾ (2, 2 ½)" less than desired finished length.
TOE-Rnd 1: Needle 1: K to last 3 sts. K2tog, K1;
Needle 2: K1, sl 1, K1, psso, K to last 3 sts, K2 tog, K1;
Needle 3: K1, Sl 1, K1, psso, K to end - 32 (40, 48) sts.
Rnds 2 and 3: K.
Rnd 4: Rep Rnd 1 - 28 (36, 44) sts.
Rnds 5 and 6: K.
Rnd 7: Rep Rnd 1 - 24 (32, 40) sts.
Rnd 8: K.
Rnds 9-10 (9-11, 9-12): Rep Rnd 1 - 16 (20, 24) sts. K4 (5, 6) sts from Needle 1. Place sts from Needles 1 and 3 onto one needle - 8 (10, 12) sts on each of 2 needles. Cut yarn leaving approximately 18" for grafting toe sts together.
Grafting: With instep sts facing you on Needle 1 and sole sts on Needle 2, thread rem yarn into a yarn needle. Keeping the yarn needle and yarn under the points of the knitting needles, work as follows:
* Pass yarn needle through first st of Needle 1 as if to knit and slip the stitch off, pass through 2nd st of Needle 1 as if to purl, but leave the stitch on the Needle; pass yarn needle through first st on Needle 2 as if to purl and slip the stitch off, pass yarn needle through 2nd stitch on Needle 2 as if to knit, but leave stitch on Needle. Rep from * until all the sts are joined. Fasten off. Take care to draw yarn up so that gauge of grafting equals gauge of knitted sts.
ABBREVIATIONS: beg = beginning; dec = decrease; inc = increase; K = knit; mm = millimeters; P = purl; psso = pass the slipped st over; rem = remaining; rep = repeat; rnd = round; sl = slip; St st = Stockinette stitch; st(s) = stitch (es); tog = together; * or ** = repeat whatever follows the * or ** as indicated; [ ] = work directions in brackets the number of times specified.
