COATS & CLARK'S O.N.T. "SPEED-CRO-SHEEN" Mer­cerized Cotton, Art. C.44: 2 balls of No. 1 White, 1 ball of Black and scraps of Red.

Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 1/0 (zero).

No. 720 UNITED WIRE NOVELTY NAPKIN HOLDER with top piece ... 2 large sequins, 3 small sequins and 3 beads ... 6-inch length of Millinery wire ... ¼ yard of narrow ribbon.

Gauge: 6 sc make 1 inch.

HEAD (Make 2) ... Starting at center with White, ch 2. 1st rnd: 7 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 2nd rnd: 2 sc in each sc around (7 increases). 3rd rnd: Sc in each sc around, making 7 increases evenly spaced. Repeat 3rd rnd until piece measures 2½ inches in diameter. Next rnd: Sc in each sc around. Ch 1, turn.

NECK ... 1st row: Sc in next 6 sc. Ch 1, turn. Repeat first row for 1 inch. Break off.

BODY (Make 2) ... Work as for HEAD until piece measures 4½ inches in diameter. Next rnd: Sc in each sc around. Last rnd: * Ch 5, skip 3 sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join and break off.

EAR (Make 2) ... Starting at center with White, ch 6. 1st row: Sc in each ch across, making 3 sc in last ch. Now, working along opposite side of chain, make sc in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc around, making 3 sc in center sc of 3-sc group. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Repeat 2nd row. Break off. 4th row: Attach Black. Repeat 3rd row.

BIB  ... Starting at center with Black, ch 10. Work as for EAR until 8 rows have been com­pleted. Break off.

TAIL  ... With Black make a chain 6 inches long. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, making 3 sc in last ch. Now, working over wire along opposite side of chain, make sc in each ch across. Break off.

DRAWSTRING (Make 2) ... With White make a chain 20 inches long. Break off.

Pull drawstring through loops of one BODY piece and place over napkin holder. Tie ends together. Place 2 HEAD pieces over holder and sew edges together. Sew EARS and BIB in place. Trim as shown—large sequins for eyes, small sequins and beads for buttons. Embroider mouth in Red and spots in Black. For whiskers, cut 3 strands, each 3 inches long. Fold in half and attach to each side of mouth. Make a bow and sew in place. Place other BODY piece in place for back of napkin holder and embroider a few spots. Fold TAIL in half lengthwise, sew edges together and sew in place. Cut a strand of White and Black, each 2 yards long and twist around lower part of napkin holder for feet and fasten in place.
