NOTES: Each sq consists of 2 rows of pat. Each row of pat consists of one diagonal half of each sq in row. If work tends to go on the bias during construction, pull short corners in opposite directions until work is straight.

CENTER PANEL: Approximately 38" wide by 56" long.

With B loosely ch 140 for base ch.

Pat Row 1: (right side) With B, * work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 hdc in next ch, 1 dc in next ch, skip 3 ch, sc in next ch (right diagonal half of sq completed), ch 4; rep from * across, end last rep by drawing up a lp in last ch, drop B, draw a lp of A through last 2 B lps on hook to change color and ch 4. (There are 34 diagonal half sqs in row.) Mark this row as right side of lower edge. Turn.

Row 2: With A, * working along diagonal edge of half sq, work 1 dc in dc, 1 hdc in hdc, 1 sc in sc at point, (sq completed), 1 tr in sc at base of next half sq; rep from * across, end last rep by drawing up a lp in last sc of last half sq, drop A, draw a lp of C through last 2 A lps on hook and ch 4, turn. (There are 34 completed sqs on row.)

Row 3: With C, * work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 hdc in next ch, 1 dc in last ch, skip 3 sts on row below, 1 sc in next sc at beg of next sq, ch 4; rep from * across, end last rep by drawing up alp in 4th ch of turning-ch on previous row, drop C, carry B up loosely along side edge from 2 rows below and draw a lp of B through last 2 C lps on hook.
