Cables 'N Tweed Afghan

Approximately 54 x 68 ins., without fringe.

(For Intermediate Knitters)

MATERIALS: Columbia-Minerva Nantuk 4-ply (4 oz. ball)-7 Color A; 2 each Colors B, C and D.
Nantuk colors shown are (A) Dk Rust, (B) Dk Coffee, (C) Cocoa, (D) Honey.
NEEDLES: Size 9-or size needed to obtain gauge given below. Cable needle.
CROCHET HOOK: Size F.

GAUGE: In pattern
Tweed Panel-
9 sts=2 ins., 14 rows=2 ins. Each panel = 9 ½ ins. wide.
Cable Strip-16 st strip =3 ins. wide.
Take time to precheck gauge and pat.

TWEED PANEL: (Make 4.) Sl all sl sts as to p. Do not break colors; carry color to be used firmly, but not tightly, up along right side edge.

With A cast on 43 sts and p 1 row.

Pat Row 1: (right side) With A, k 1, * with yarn at back (wyb) sl 1, k 3; rep from * across ending with sl 1, k 1.

Row 2: With A, p 1, * with yarn at front (wyf) sl 1, p 3; rep from * across ending with sl 1, p 1.

Row 3: With B, k 3, * wyb sl 1, k 3; rep from * to end.

Row 4: With B, p 3, * wyf sl 1, P 3; rep from * to end.

Rows 5 and 6: With C, rep rows 1 and 2.

Rows 7 and 8: With D, rep rows 3 and 4.

Rep these 8 rows for pat until about 68" from beg, end with A and pat row 2.

With A, rep rows 3 and 4. Bind off as to k.

BASIC BRAIDED CABLE STRIP: (Make 3.) With A cast on 16 sts.

Row 1 and All Wrong Side Rows: K 2, p 12, k2.

Row 2: P2, k 12, p 2.

Row 4-Double Left Twist Row: P 2, * sl next 3 sts to cable needle (cn) and hold at front of work, k next 3 sts, k 3 sts from cn *; rep between *'s, p 2.

Row 6: Rep row 2.

Row 8-Single Right Twist Row: P 2, k 3, sl next 3 sts to cn and hold at back of work, k next 3 sts, k 3 sts from cn, k3, p2.

Rep these 8 rows for pat until about 68" from beg ending on right side with a twist row. Work 1 row on wrong side. Bind off in pat as for row 2.

RIGHT EDGE CABLE STRIP: (Make 1.) With A cast on 18 sts.

Row 1 and All Wrong Side Rows: K 2, p 12, k4.

Row 2: K 2, p 2, k 12, p 2.

Row 4: K 2, then work as row 4 of basic cable strip to end.

Row 6: Rep row 2.

Row 8: K 2, then work as row 8 of basic cable strip to end.

Working the 2 extra sts at right side edge as k sts on every row for garter st border, complete same as basic cable strip.

LEFT EDGE CABLE STRIP: (Make 1.) With A cast on 18 sts.

Row 1 and All Wrong Side Rows: K 4, p 12, k 2.

Row 2: P 2, k 12, p 2, k 2.

Row 4: Work as row 4 of basic cable strip, end with k 2.

Row 6: Rep row 2.

Row 8: Work as row 8 of basic cable strip, end with k 2.

Working the 2 extra sts at left side edge as k sts on every row for garter st border, complete same as basic cable strip.

JOINING: Having right sides on same side and all cast-on edges at same end, arrange 4 tweed panels with 1 basic braided cable strip between. Beg at cast-on ends, with blunt needle and A sew side edges of each panel and strip tog taking care to cover colors carried on side edges of panels. Sew right edge cable strip to outside edge of first panel and left edge cable strip to outside edge of last panel.

FINISHING: From right side, with crochet hook and A, keeping edges flat, work a row of sc across upper and lower ends working about 3 sc in every 4 sts.

Fringe: Wind A loosely around a 5" piece of cardboard; cut one end. Working from wrong side of afghan, beg in first sc on either end, * fold 4 strands of cut yarn in half forming a loop, insert hook in sc and draw all strands of loop through sc for about 1", then draw loose ends through loop and tighten; rep from * in every other sc across edge ending in last sc. Work fringe on opposite end in same way.

Steam afghan lightly to measurements and trim fringe evenly.
