Knit Purse measures 5" x 5". Crochet Bag measures 4" high x 3 ¼" across.

J. & P. COATS® Crochet Nylon, 100% nylon, Art. A70 (150 yard tubes).

KNIT PURSE

Amount: 1 Tube No. 19 Black.

Knitting Needles: U.S. Size 6 [4mm].

Crochet Hook: U.S. Size F-5 [3 ¾ mm].

GAUGE: In Garter st - 19 sts = 4"; 36 rows = 4". CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needles to obtain the gauge given.

PURSE: Cast on 25 sts. Work in Garter st (Knit every row) until 9" from beg.

Shape Flap: Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows - 19 sts. Work even until 3" above bind-off. Dec 1 st each end of every row until 3 sts rem. Next Row: Sl 1, K2tog, psso. Fasten off.

STRAP: Cast on 215 sts. Bind off.

FINISHING: Fold lower section of purse so that cast-on edge meets the bind-off sts of flap. Sew side seams. With crochet hook join thread at a seam and work 1 rnd sc evenly around purse opening, including flap, taking care to keep work flat; join with a sl st to first sc. Fasten off. Sew ends of strap at seams under crocheted edging. Weave in ends.

CROCHETED BAG

Amount: 1 Tube No. 6 Red.

Crochet Hook: U.S. Size G-6 [4mm].

GAUGE: Rnds 1-3 = 3 ¾" across. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge given.

BAG: Ch 5; join with a sl st to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3, 15 dc in ring; join with a sl st to top of ch-3 - 16 sts.

Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same ch as joining, 2 dc in each dc around; join - 32 sts.

Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc in same ch as joining, dc in next dc, [2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc] 15 times; join - 48 sts.

Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in back lp of each st around; join in both lps of first sc.

Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in both lps of each sc around; join.

Rnd 6: Ch 1, sc in first sc, * skip next 2 sc, 5 dc in next sc, skip next 2 sc **, sc in next sc; rep from * around, end at **; join.

Rnd 7: Ch 3, 2 dc in same sc as joining, * skip next dc, sc in next 3 dc *, skip next dc, 3 dc in next sc; rep from * around, end at **; join to top of ch-3.

Rnd 8: Ch 1, * sc in next dc, skip next 2 sts, 5 dc in next sc, skip next 2 sts; rep from * around; join.

Rnds 9-13: Rep Rnds 7 and 8 twice more, then rep Rnd 7 again.

Beading Rnd 14: Ch 4, skip next dc, * dc in next st, ch 1, skip next st; rep from * around; join to 3rd ch of ch-4.

Rnd 15: Ch 1, * (sc, ch 3, sc) all in next sp, 2 sc in next sp; rep from * around; join. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

STRAP: Cut two 9-yard lengths of thread. Bring the 4 cut ends together and tie in a knot close to the ends. Have a friend hold this end or tape it to a table. Slip a pencil or crochet hook in the loop opposite the knotted end; keeping thread taut, twirl the pencil (twisting the strands) until threads are very tightly twisted. Bring loop and knotted ends together; secure to prevent untwisting. Remaining thread will form the twisted cord; smooth kinks from cord. Weave the cord through the Beading rnd of bag. Tie the cord in a knot about 5" from the ends. Cut off original knot and allow thread ends to form a tassel. Trim.
