Glass Paperweight

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

This paperweight is just a small bottle filled with a mixture of salt, water and cake coloring. An ink bottle makes a good container, or any small transparent jar you happen to have empty at your house or can be found pretty cheaply at a dollar store.

To make the mixture that goes inside the bottle, first pour several tablespoons of salt into a small cup, then add water a few drops at a time until the salt is uniformly damp (do not have the mixture soupy). To the dampened salt, add a few drops of cake coloring. Pack this mixture down in the bottom of the empty bottle. Now make another batch of the salt mixture, using a different color, and pack it on top of the first layer. When the bottle is all filled up, screw on the top, then paint the cover with enamel or fingernail polish.
