Kitty and bear faces make these crocheted baby blankets extra special in RED HEART® Baby Sport Econo Yarn.
SUPPLIES
Blankets measure approximately 40" x 40".
RED HEART® Baby Sport Pompadour, Art. E257, 90% acrylic/10% olefin, (6 ounce skeins): 14 Ounces MC, 9 ounces CA, 1 ounce CB.

Crochet Hook: 5.5mm [US Size I-9].
Yarn needle; 32 9/16" matching buttons and 18 7/16" buttons; sewing needle and thread.
GAUGE: 20 sts = 5 1/2"; 10 rows = 5 1/2" in dc. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.
NOTE: Blankets are made in strips which are appliqued, then sewn together.
STRIP A (Make 4): With CA, ch 22.
Row 1 (Right Side): Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across; turn 20 sts.
Row 2: Ch 3, skip first dc, dc in each dc across and in top of ch-3; turn.
Rep Row 2 until 10 rows in all have been completed, changing to MC in last dc of 10th row. Work [10 rows MC, 10 rows CA] 3 times. Fasten off.
STRIP B (Make 3): Work same as Strip A EXCEPT alternate the colors: begin with 10 rows MC, then work [10 rows CA, 10 rows MC] 3 times.
KITTIES APPLIQUE (Make 25)-Face: With MC, ch 3; join with a sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3, 9 dc in ring; join with a sl st to top of ch-3 10 sts.
Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same st as joining, [2 dc in next dc] 9 times; join - 20 sts.
Rnd 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in next dc, [dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc] 9 times; - 30 sts.
Next Row - Shape Ears: * Ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, tr in next ch, skip next 2 dc *, sl st in next 7 dc; rep from * to * once; sl st in next dc. Fasten off.
Nose: With MC, ch 3; [yo and draw up a lp] 4 times all in 3rd ch from hook, yo and draw through all 9 lps on hook. Fasten off tightly.
With CB, embroider mouth, whiskers, and outline ears. Sew applique to each CA section. Sew larger button “eyes” on each face on Strip A and smaller button “eyes” on each face on Strip B. Sew strips together as pictured.
BEARS APPLIQUE (Make 25)-Face: Work Rnds 1-3 same as for Kitties.
Next Row - Shape Ears: Ch 1, sc in same st as joining, * (hdc, dc, hdc) all in next dc, sc in next dc *, sl st in next 7 dc, sc in next dc; rep from * to * once; sl st in next dc. Fasten off.
Complete same as for Kitty Applique, omitting whisker embroidery. Sew strips together.
EDGING-Rnd 1: With right side facing, attach MC in any st; ch 1, work sc evenly around, working 3 sc in each corner; join with a sl st to first sc. Fasten off.
Rnd 2: Rep Rnd 1 with CB. Fasten off.
Kitty Rnd 3: With right side facing, attach MC in any sc; * ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, tr in next ch, skip next 2 sc, sl st in next sc; rep from * around, adjusting to fit around corners and at end of rnd. Fasten off.
Bear Rnd 3: With right side facing, attach MC in any sc; ch 1, sc in same sc as joining, * (hdc, dc, hdc) all in next sc **, sc in next sc; rep from * around, adjusting to fit around corners and at end of rnd, end at **; join. Fasten off.
