The Haunted House on the Hill quilted wall-hanging is created with appliqués using Dual Duty XP All Purpose thread colors. The traditional Halloween designs forming the border can also be applied to totes or sweatshirts.
SUPPLIES:
- Coats Dual Duty XP All Purpose Thread: colors to match fabrics (black, orange, yellow, and green)
- Fabrics:
Deep blue ¾ yard
Black 2 ½ yards
Orange ¼ yard
Yellow ½ yard
Green scraps - Light weight paper-backed fusible adhesive: 1 ½ yards
- Low loft batting: 1 ⅛ yards
- Quilt binding: Black, 2 packages
- Tear away stabilizer
- Adhesive spray
- Plastic Rings 1": 2
- House Pattern
- Cat Pattern
- Pumpkin Pattern
- Witch's Hat Pattern
CUTTING:
Cut:
2 8-inch orange squares
1 8-inch deep blue square
1 23 ¾" x 24 ½" deep blue rectangle
2 1" x 8" black strips
3 2" x 24" black strips
2 2" x 36" black strips
1 30" x 40" black for wall hanging backing
1 30" x 40" low loft batting
PATTERNS:
- Enlarge house pattern 400%.
- All other patterns are actual size.
- Draw a circle 12" in diameter for the moon.
- Reverse and trace patterns to the paper side of the lightweight paper backed fusible adhesive. Cut out the pattern pieces close to but not on the cutting lines.
- Fuse to fabric according to manufacturer's directions:
Orange: Pumpkin pattern
Black: House, Cat, and Hat patterns
Yellow: Pumpkin face, hat trim, cat collar, windows and moon.
Green: Cat eyes and Pumpkin Stem. - Once fused, cut pattern pieces on cutting lines.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Note: Use ¼" seam allowance.
Use tear away stabilizer behind all appliqué.
- Center the witch hat on 1 orange square. Fuse in place. Appliqué with Dual Duty XP black thread with a satin stitch. Appliqué hat band along guidelines with Dual Duty XP yellow thread.
- Center cat on 8-inch orange fabric. Fuse. Fuse eyes and collar in place. Appliqué in place with matching Dual Duty XP threads.
- Fuse pumpkin face pieces on pumpkin. Center pumpkin and pumpkin stem on deep blue square. Fuse in place. With a straight stitch make detail lines on the pumpkin. Appliqué in place with Dual Duty XP orange thread using a satin stitch.
- Sew one 1" x 8" strip of black to each side of the pumpkin square. Sew the hat square to a black strip and the cat block to the other side of the pumpkin block. Press.
- Sew one 2" x 24" strip of black to the top of the 3 small blocks. Sew another 2" x 24" strip of black to the bottom. Press.
- Place yellow window squares on the house using the house pattern as a guide. Fuse and appliqué in place with Dual Duty XP yellow thread.
- Align the bottom of the house outline to the bottom of the deep blue rectangle. Place the moon off center behind the house. See photo. Fuse both in place. Appliqué with a satin stitch with Dual Duty XP yellow and black threads.
- Sew a 2" x 24" black strip to the top of the deep blue panel. Press. Sew the house panel to the lower panel of three squares. Press.
- Sew a 2" x 36" black strip to each side of the wall hanging. Press.
- Layer black backing fabric, batting and wall hanging top. Baste in place using the temporary spray adhesive or safety pins.
- Machine quilt around the outline of the house and moon with Dual Duty XP black thread. Quilt around the black sashing of the wall hanging and across the black sash separating the house panel from the smaller squares and the narrow sashes separating the 8-inch squares.
- Sew the quilt binding to the front of the wall hanging mitering corners. Turn the bias tape to the back of the wall hanging. Slip stitch the bias to the back along the seam line.
- Hand sew a 1" plastic ring to the top corners for hanging.
